FINAL IMPRISONMENT

Final Imprisonment. Not a event that happens all too often in mafia games, and one that is extremely exciting to see. It is literally impossible for a game to get any closer than this one has now. How many 33 player games whittle themselves this far down? Through 33 players and 14 episodes, the gameplay on both sides was so evenly matched that it all comes down to this: one final vote. Three remaining players. The Final Three have traversed 69 treacherous days and gotten to the point where they are in the position of deciding who wins. Only them.

Presumably, these lucky three individuals were not one of the Top 16 spy suspects in the Burg. If they were, they may have been Exiled. Assumedly, these lucky three individuals were also not one of the Top 12 trusted members of the Burg. If they were, they may have been Imprisoned. What’s left is a bunch of people in between, of indeterminate alignment, involved in ways in events over the past 69 days which could point to either conclusion.

Clearly the final remaining Spy has to have done something right to get this far. They’ve outlasted all of their compatriots, hidden better than their allies, and manipulated events to their personal advantage. Since, truly, all that differentiates Citizens and Spies is an Imprisonment choice and a mindset, perhaps they have become virtually undetectable. Perhaps there is no evidence to ‘catch’ them with, at least evidence that could not be pointed to all of you.

Your decision is as crucial as it gets. Both Citizens must vote for the Spy or all could be lost. There are two options before you: one person who has played the game as a Citizen from the start, and another who has played the game as a Spy from the start. In front of you also is 69 days of gameplay, 16 Exile votes, 12 Imprisonment selections, 6 possible connections to eliminated Spies, the opinions of 22 eliminated Citizens, and your gut. Maybe it won’t be so difficult after all.

Tonight’s Imprisonment was written entirely by Tim (spies2Rodney). I appreciate him allowing me to use his work in this way. The story is fantastic and I’m excited to show it to you today. Here’s his explanation:

One of my current classes is Creative Writing. We're given a topic common in short story writing, which we must write a short story about in a limited number of words (usually around 750). I had lab today, in which the topic was "Frayed Rope"; i.e. a character at the end of his rope, losing his or her grip (some movie examples we came up with were Fight Club with Edward Norton and The Game with Michael Douglas).

As soon as they gave us the topic, the first idea of a 'frayed rope' scenario that came to my mind was Spies, so I ended up writing a short story about the final four called 'The Last Day'. After I got done with it, I liked it so much that I wanted to share it with you to see what you thought. So I got home after lab, expanded the story beyond the lab parameters and word limit, and here's what I came up with. Hope you like it.

Thank you so much Tim for writing the story tonight, I really appreciate it. I've been working off and on on this all day and appreciated the unexpected reprieve. ::)

'The Last Day'

Otto walked into the town square with an exasperated look on his face. He’d been wrong a number of times before. His track record had been abysmal. But this was different. There were only four people left. If they didn’t succeed today, that was it. Game over. The government would come rolling in, taking each of them out one by one. The town had worked so hard to keep that from happening. But the simple fact remained: their numbers were down to just 4. They had to work together and win it, and they had to win it now.

Otto went over to the square column in the center of the pagoda that had served as the Burg’s community bulletin board. All four walls of the column were completely covered in paper, pen, and marker. It detailed the Burg’s hunt for those undercover agents that were trying to betray them to the government. The Spies.

Otto shuddered. In the Burg, that was worse than a curse word. There had been several Spies working to destroy each of the gangs that had been warring against one another. Ironically, it was their presence that had caused the gangs to band together to eliminate a common threat. Each group had continued to escalate their efforts and there had been numerous casualties. But the Spies had also taken hits, and one by one, the Burg had found most of them and driven them from their community.

But the war was not over. One Spy still remained.

Otto walked over to the column, pondering his history as he grabbed a thumbtack and posted his suspicions on the wall. From behind him, he heard a faint chortling sound. He whipped around and saw Delilah standing there, looking at the list he’d just posted on the column.

“So, what exactly makes you so sure that you’re right this time?” she sneered, with a matching expression evident on her face.

Otto exhaled and hung his head for a moment. “I know I’ve been wrong before, but that doesn’t matter now. I’ve looked over everything as best as I could, and for me, there’s no other possibility, okay?” He knew the logic in that sentence was hollow, but he didn’t care. He was desperate; they all were.

Delilah picked up on it immediately. “Ah, I see. For you, the argument is self-evident. Might I add that you had such an argument against Katie, and after she was unceremoniously outcast we found no evidence at all in her apartment? Katie was no Spy, Otto, despite the fact that you were so convinced it was her.”

Otto stood, blinking a number of times, unsure of how to respond, when Darla rounded the corner and nearly walked right into him. In earlier days, she would’ve apologized, but that time was no longer now. Otto and Delilah looked down, spotting a ream of paper in Darla’s hand; obviously a new case of her own. She glanced over at Otto’s hand, still holding the tack he’d used to post his case, and laughed at his meager attempt at an argument.

“Oh please, Otto,” Darla began, sounding nearly identical to Delilah. “You’ve got no more credibility to point fingers than Delilah does.”

“And just what is that supposed to mean?” Delilah screamed back at her.

Darla shrugged her off. “Oh, don’t you dare even say anything. What have you done to try and figure out the Spies, huh? Shouted your little mouth off, until your lips cracked from all the crap spewing of them? Anything you say is just an annoyance.”

Delilah gawked back. “Oh, yeah? At least I’ve done more for the Burg than she has!” she yelled, pointing at Samantha, who until now none of them even realized had been there.

Samantha glanced around before returning Delilah’s accusatory gaze. “Hey! I’ve had my own things to do, all right?”

“Yeah, Spy things,” Darla jeered.

“Oh, don’t even pull that with me,” Samantha exploded back in frustration. “You know I was never involved with Donnie or Angus or any of the other Spies. I had personal things I had to take care of, and that took priority over all the crap I’ve seen happen in this Burg as of late.”

“Cry me a river, Samantha,” Delilah happily chimed in. “How do we know that isn’t just some Spy excuse? You’re just trying to cover your ass from the flames,. It’s pathetic that you’re even trying.”

“The same could be said of you,” Darla interjected with a disapproving smirk.

Delilah looked over, pausing, and shook her head in bewilderment. “Oh. Oh, you. Okay. Let’s take a look at what Mrs. Savant has so generously bestowed upon the Burg with her brilliant mind, shall we?”

Otto watched, his eyes darting back and forth as each person spoke up louder and louder each time. The verbal blows threatened to hold his head underwater further and further, drowning him in their banality. He found himself turning to the wall and grabbing a hunk of papers, ripping them off the column and plunging them into the trash. He turned back at the other three as they all stared at each other in silence.

None of them had any fucking idea what to do.

The silence seemed to deafen, unwavering, save for the faint wisps of sarcastic laughter. Laughter from the soon-to-be successes of the six fallen Spies. Waiting to be delivered their next victim.

Darla has been kidnapped and Imprisoned by the Spies.

You will never see her again.

Darla : please post Final Words in your confessional immediately.

Judge Sam: “I haven’t one single thing negative to say about you Darla. Every single day you were a persistent, major part of this game. You kicked ass in every single challenge and never apologized for it. You talked with nearly everybody on AIM every single episode. I am very lucky to have you as a part of this game and I hope you enjoyed playing as much as I enjoyed hosting you. To a certain extent, you were Spies 5, and I thank you for that. Congratulations on, once again, owning everybody from start to finish. This game wouldn’t have been the same without you.

I love you! If we were jewish lesbians we would make the hottest couple! ::) Too bad Otto got to you first. :(

Judge Sam: “The Final Imprisonment is over. The last of the Spies eliminations are done. There’s no more reason to hold back. The only way the Spies can get you now is if you lose.

Less than 48 hours until your final decision is due. Recall that votes are due at 7:00 PM CST Sunday and that Exile will take place at 8:00 PM CST Sunday, similar to last time. I need that hour to finalize things and prepare for the finale.

To say 'choose wisely' would be an understatement. Good luck Spy.”

Let me make a general observation - the test of a first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposed ideas in the mind at the same time, and still retain the ability to function. One should, for example, be able to see that things are hopeless and yet be determined to make them otherwise.
